The Sounds at The Ogden

Swedish sensations The Sounds brought their New Wave-Synth sound to the Mile High City on a frigid Wednesday night to the delight of the near capacity crowd at the Ogden Theater. Anytime I think anything Swedish (aside from those delightful red gummy candies) the first thing that comes to mind is beautiful blonde women, such is the case for lead singer Maja Ivarrson. Often compared to Debbie Harry of Blondie, Maja brings and all too familiar similarity to the former Playboy Bunny even managing to spit oh so elegantly in between sets.

With a heavily influenced synth-electro sound the Swedes give an all intense, high energy show that the crowd feeds on from the opening note. Spanning from their catalog of two albums they played crowd favorites “Fire”, “Night After Night”, “Rock n Roll”. Even current Geico commercial song “Hurt You” had many in the crowd anticipating two cavemen riding in on motorcycles with their flashy leather jackets. While the Denver crowd was indulging in all the free shwag from sponsors Camel, openers Epilogues opened up with a perfect set along with superstar DJ sensation Tommie Sunshine who dropped his fair share of electro-indie flavored beats to the mini dance floor that took residence on the side of the stage. With a new album in the works expect The Sounds to bless us with their ear-candy sound of post-punk new wave that is often imitated with failure amongst many new up and coming acts. Words of wisdom to those…. follow the blueprint The Sounds draw out; a hot blonde singer always helps as well.
